The Scientific and Industrial Corporation Vavilov State Optical Institute (SIC SOI) was organized on the base of the State Optical Institute founded in 1918 on initiative of Dmitry S. Rozhdestvensky.
In 1931 SOI was designated as leading research institute in the field of optics: serving as example of high quality of work and by its activities, it should systematically organize the work of all industrial branches related to optics .
In 2008 SOI was designated as leading optical research organization in the industrial and defense-industrial complexes.
SIC SOI
- carries out the fundamental and exploring research in prospective directions of development of optics and photonics within the frameworks of federal goal-oriented programs, grants of Russian Foundation for Basic Research, international scientific and technical programs, and based on initiative activities;
- develops and manufactures the samples of new optical, electro-optical, and laser equipment by request of the state, by request of Russian enterprises, and within the frameworks of export contracts;
- publishes the Journal of Optical Technology;
- takes part in organizing and participates in the All-Russian and international scientific seminars and conferences on optics and photonics;
- educates the highly skilled specialists for Russian optical science: the dissertation council and post-graduate study are available in SOI, and it provides the possibility of educating the students and postgraduates of Saint Petersburg State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics in the laboratories and manufacturing shops of corporation.
